A last-minute flight from Paris to Basel, Switzerland wasn’t cheap, but it was available and for that I was grateful. By the time I got to the CDG—after rushing downstairs to beg Geneviève to move upstairs to be with Robbie—the terminal was a maze of people, running, languidly walking, and even sleeping. In my mind, they all seemed to move like one amorphous blob, almost like a school of fish, darting and weaving to get to their respective destinations.

The security lines were long even at this time of night. The smell of coffee wafted down the wide hallways and because this is France the scent of garlic drifted down to from the many concession stands along the terminals’ walkways.

I sat at my gate and looked through the huge plate glass window onto the runway with its colorful landing beacons and bright runway lights. I forced myself to close my eyes and take a long breath and block out the look on Geneviève’s face when I’d told her what I was doing.

I knew she thought I’m crazy, but I also knew that up until tonight I had zero leads for finding the baby born earlier this year from Catherine’s stolen egg. I couldn’t live with myself if I just walked away from any possibility—no matter how crazy—that might lead me to him.

I tried to block out the general commotion around me of the planes, roaring and shaking the glass as they took off, of people talking on their cell phones and the ocean of noise that crested and receded in my brain.

I needed to stay focused. I needed to think of nothing else but my mission. The mysterious text message had definitely come from someone who knew about the frozen eggs, and my desperate search for the male baby born from one of them. That would have to mean Abd-El-Kader or perhaps the surrogate mother herself. It mattered little to me which one it was.
